History Of The Routledge Run
This event was started in 1954, dedicated to Bob Routledge, a respected motorcycle mechanic and one of the signers of the 1939 GVMC incorporation. The original perpetual trophy features a pewter figure of a German army dispatch rider on a BMW that was donated to the Club by GVMC member Don Franks. This may have been a souvenir brought back by returning soldiers after World War II, but it’s exact origin and significance is a mystery.
Traditionally, the event was held as a Saturday ride to a campground, with a field meet on Sunday. Field meets involved tests of rider skill, such as riding a length of 2x4, throwing darts from a moving bike, rolling a barrel with the front wheel, a slow race (last one across the finish line wins, touch a foot down you’re out), and any other crowd pleasing stunts the organizers could dream up.
The field meets gradually lost their appeal, and with the rise in dual sport riding, the event was given a fresh approach. The Routledge Run has in recent years been successful as a two-day ride, with street riders and dual sport riders taking separate routes to an overnight campout. The camaraderie and good times continue.
Event Comments: July 7-9th 2023 was the 69th Annual Routledge Run.
Our ride started at the Acacia Grove Campgrounds in Spences Bridge on Friday the 7th of July to 37-degree heat. We had 11 participants with both adventure touring and road bikes ready to ride.
On Saturday Morning the weather cooled to a beautiful 27 degrees and participants were treated to an egg - sausage McMuffin with oranges and grapefruit, juice and coffee.
The adventure touring ride saw 4 riders head for Lytton and Lillooet areas while the road riders headed for Hwy 24 to Barriere for lunch then back to Spences bridge via Hwy 1.
The four riders who chose to do the Adventure Ride were taken through Lytton to Lillooet, Bridge River Road over Mission Mountain to Shalalth over the Seton Hiline to D’Arcy. From there the route went to Pemberton then Duffy Lake to Lillooet and back to Spence’s Bridge. Unfortunately, due to an accident near Lillooet, the ride was cut short, and the group returned to Spence’s Bridge. The accident was not serious, no injuries, but a broken brake lever made carrying on too risky, so the ride was terminated.
The Road Ride saw five riders head north up Hwy. 1 to Hwy. 24, across 24 to Hwy. 5 and south on 5 to Kamloops and back to Spence’s Bridge via Hwy. 1. At a rest stop along the way the group met up with a couple of riders who were returning to Florida after traveling to Alaska.
Returnees were greeted with a NY steak dinner bar-b-qued by master chef Wes Jamison with all the mushrooms and or sautéed onions they could load, with asparagus and baked potato followed by Debbie's world-famous no-bake cherry cheesecake.
All riders were given 2 GVMC logo'd key fob air tag trackers.
The event went very well, and all had a great time with conversation and riding.
It’s the guests who chose to ride the event that make the event a success.
